The Young Progressive Party (YPP) governorship candidate for Anambra State election, Paul Chukwuma, has called for the strategic integration of new media into Nigeria’s development agenda, emphasizing its transformative potential in fostering inclusive governance, accountability, and national unity.
Chukwuma made these remarks while delivering the keynote address at the Progressive Digital Media Summit held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Speaking on the theme, “The Role of New Media in National Development,” he described digital platforms as more than mere communication tools, calling them powerful enablers of democratic engagement and economic opportunity.

“New media empowers citizens by creating space for transparency, civic participation, and real-time engagement with government institutions,” Chukwuma stated. “It is a catalyst for national integration and inclusive growth.”
He emphasised the need to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide, urging policymakers to prioritise broadband expansion, digital literacy, and investment in tech-driven startups. According to Chukwuma, these elements are vital to unlocking the full benefits of digital innovation, especially in underserved communities.
In addition, he advocated for the development of balanced regulatory frameworks that uphold freedom of expression while tackling misinformation and cybercrime. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s support of democratic principles and digital transformation, noting that such leadership is key to embedding new media in Nigeria’s development strategy.
President Tinubu, in his own remarks at the summit, echoed Chukwuma’s sentiments. He highlighted the transformative impact of digital media on governance and social inclusion, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for innovation and digital rights.

He says, “We must embrace new media as a vital instrument for transparency, unity, and economic empowerment,” the President said. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure its ethical use and equitable access for all Nigerians.”
President Tinubu also called on public and private stakeholders to collaborate in expanding digital infrastructure and advancing media literacy across the country. He emphasized that Nigeria’s prosperity depends on how well it adapts to the realities of the digital age.
The summit brought together key stakeholders, including Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, Chief of Staff to the President Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, and Minister of Information Mohammed Idris. Discussions centered on the evolving role of new media in shaping democratic institutions and accelerating socio-economic growth.
