Nigerian motorists have been warned to desist from over speeding, overloading and use of unsafe tyres to ensure their safety from road accidents as the yuletide period approaches.

This warning was issued on Thursday in Ilorin, Kwara state capital,by the state commander of The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Fredrick Ogidan at this year’s edition of the annual ember month safety campaign themed: “Avoid speeding, overloading and unsafe tyres to arrive alive”.

Ogidan lamented that the recklessness of some motorists and unsafe night trips have claimed over thirty lives within the first week of the last quarter of this year.

He called for the cooperation of motorists in order to make the road safe saying that, “all efforts of stakeholders in Road Traffic Management geared towards Safety on our Roads will be an exercise in futility if there is no correspondence response from Motorists;”

He stressed that, “As we approach the end of year 2022, the increase in vehicular movement may result in increase in Road Traffic Crash (RTC) if all hands are not on deck to ensure safety on our Roads through Public Enlightenment and Education, effective Patrols and prompt Rescue Services.”

FRSC assured that as the lead agency in Road Traffic Management in Nigeria, they have a mandate to reduce this year’s Road Traffic Crash Fatality by 15% in tandem with goal 1 of the Corps 2022 Corporate Strategic Goals.

“In 2022, we have a mandate to reduce Road Traffic Crash Fatality by 15% …our overall goal is to reduce RTC deaths by 50% by the year 2030 using 2019 as a baseline, in addition to our vision of a country where Road Traffic Crash results in no death.”
