Zimbabwe Protesters Demand President Mnangagwa’s Immediate Resignation

A national protest in Zimbabwe was largely shut down by a heavy security presence on Monday, as demonstrators demanded President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation. The protests were sparked by plans to extend Mnangagwa’s rule beyond his current term, which ends in 2028 .

Most businesses, offices, and schools in Harare and Bulawayo closed, and people stayed home fearing unrest. Independence war veterans, who previously supported Mnangagwa, called for the demonstration, accusing him of corruption and wanting to cling to power .

Mnangagwa’s ruling ZANU-PF party wants him to stay in office until 2030, sparking concerns about his commitment to the country’s 2013 constitution, which limits presidents to two five-year terms .

The situation remains tense, with police using teargas to disperse protesters in Harare. Despite government assurances of peace, many Zimbabweans remain skeptical about Mnangagwa’s intentions
