Zimbabwean billionaire to build Africa’s First Nvidia-Powered AI Factory

Zimbabwean billionaire and founder of Cassava Technologies, Strive Masiyiwa, has unveiled plans to establish Africa’s first artificial intelligence (AI) factory, powered by global tech giant Nvidia.

This groundbreaking initiative, known as “Project Mufungi,” aims to deploy high-performance AI computing infrastructure across the continent, marking a significant step in Africa’s digital transformation.

Masiyiwa’s vision for Project Mufungi is to empower African businesses, researchers, and startups with the computing power necessary to develop indigenous AI models. By establishing AI infrastructure within the continent, Africa can reduce its reliance on foreign technology while fostering homegrown innovation and economic growth.

“The AI revolution is here, and Africa must take part in shaping its future,” Masiyiwa stated.

The initial phase of the AI factory is set to launch in South Africa by June 2025, with subsequent expansions planned for Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria. The facility will leverage Nvidia’s advanced computing technology, integrating AI-driven solutions into Cassava’s data centres to support businesses and innovators across various sectors.
