Uganda-born politician Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the next Mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim to hold the position in the city’s history.
Mamdani, a Democrat and former state lawmaker, secured a decisive victory in Tuesday’s mayoral election, marking a significant milestone in the city’s political landscape.
The 34-year-old, who spent part of his childhood in South Africa before moving to the United States, is also set to become New York’s youngest mayor in more than a century.
In his victory speech, Mamdani reaffirmed his commitment to inclusivity, describing New York as “a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and now led by an immigrant.”
He pledged to work towards policies that reflect unity and social justice, saying the city would continue to be a beacon of diversity and opportunity.
Mamdani will officially assume office on January 1, succeeding the outgoing administration.
