10-Man Liverpool Stuns Newcastle At St James’ Park

A double from Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez gave 10-man Liverpool a thrilling come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Newcastle, at the St James’ Park Stadium upon Tyne, England.

The hosts featured Alexander Isak in attack, with Miguel Almiron and Anthony Gordon supporting on the flanks. For the visitors, Cody Gakpo started up-front while Egyptian international Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz were on the wings.

Newcastle opened the scoring when Trent Alexander-Arnold failed to control a pass, which allowed Gordon time and space to place the ball calmly past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson in the 25th minute.

Three minutes later, Liverpool saw defender Virgil Van Dijk sent off for a foul on Alexander Isak in the first half. A clumsy challenge on Isak denied Newcastle a goalscoring opportunity.

In the second half, Newcastle appeared to lower its intensity and rested on the one-goal advantage. But Liverpool made them pay, as Nunez drew the scores level in the 81st minute when he robbed Sven Botman and fired past Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.

The Liverpool striker wasn’t finished yet and stepped up to produce another moment of magic.

Nunez again found space in the Newcastle defence and fired in a thrilling 93rd-minute winner beyond the reach of goalkeeper Pope.

Newcastle will see this as a wasted opportunity, having a man advantage for more than 60 minutes in the encounter at St James’ Park

Liverpool sensed the points were still there to be won and produced a thrilling come-back to secure all on offer.
