A group, Defenders of Constitutional Democracy (DCD) has commended the President-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for endorsing Rep. Tajudeen Abbas for the speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, jointly signed by its National convener, Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi and the Director, contact and mobilisation, Dr Chukwuma Okoro.

They said the decision of the party was in line with democratic best practices, by choosing Tajudeen (APC-Kaduna) from the North West zone.

The Group said the North West where Abbas hailed from delivered the highest number of votes to APC in the presidential election.

They said that it was only proper that the zone should be rewarded with the number four position in the country.

According to them, “we received the news of the zoning of the position of speaker of the House of Reps to the North West with utmost gladness and the subsequent endorsement of Tajudeen.”

They said the news of Abass as the preferred candidate came with great joy because a labourer deserved his wages.

The North West gave the APC 2,652,824 million votes even when both the president-elect and his vice president-elect, Sen. Kashim Shettima were not from the zone.

The group noted that Tinubu got 30 per cent of his total votes from the North West, adding that it showed that the zone was loyal to the party and its candidates.

Therefore, ceding the speakership position to the zone has shown that Tinubu and his team truly believed in a reward system that encouraged hard work, capacity and loyalty.

The group also commended the party’s decision to endorse Sen. Godswill Akpabio as its proposed candidate for the office of Senate President, and Sen. Barau Jibrin as candidate for the office of Deputy Senate President.

It also hailed the endorsement of Rep. Benjamin Kalu as candidate for the office of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
