Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MySmartMedic, a health technology subsidiary of the Uniccon Group, to deliver digital healthcare services to underserved rural populations across Nigeria.
The MoU, signed at Uniccon Group’s headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital, aims to bridge the significant healthcare gap in a country where approximately 70% of citizens live in rural areas with limited access to medical facilities.
By leveraging NigComSat’s satellite infrastructure, the initiative will overcome the limitations of terrestrial networks and extend services to the most remote parts of the country.
In her remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NigComSat, Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen, described the MoU as a milestone in Africa’s digital economic ecosystem, noting that it would enhance inclusiveness and connectivity for rural communities.
“Reliable connectivity is the foundation for delivering essential services. Satellite infrastructure provides the nationwide coverage necessary to include those beyond the reach of traditional networks.”
The Chairman of Uniccon Group, Mr Chuks Ekwueme, emphasised that the collaboration is designed to address Africa’s structural healthcare challenges through indigenous innovation. He noted that the platform’s capacity to provide affordable, AI-assisted diagnostics and virtual consultations would help reduce pressure on urban hospitals and deliver timely support to remote communities.
According to him, the partnership with NigComSat is a critical enabler, using satellite connectivity to reach underserved communities.
“This collaboration has the potential to transform healthcare delivery in Nigeria and beyond
“The rollout will begin in Nasarawa, Yobe, Borno, and Zamfara states.
“We are powering unconnected areas with the latest products. We are big on local content.”
“We are bridging the gap in connectivity and affordability so everyone can benefit from quality healthcare. Healthcare should be seamless,” Mr Ekwueme said.
