The Nigerian government Project 774 VSAT Digital installation across the seven hundred and seventy-four local government areas in Nigeria is progressively getting towards completion of the first phase by Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd (NIGCOMSAT Ltd.)
NIGCOMSAT had initiated the VSAT installation project, aiming to provide satellite coverage to 579 local government areas across Nigeria using the ku-band network asset of NigComSat-1R for the Federal Government’s Project 774.
The Head of Corporate Affairs Department, NIGCOMSAT Ltd, Mrs. Aisha Bantam disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja Nigeria’s capital.
She noted that the project which is the initiative of the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani is to connect all the local government area councils in Nigeria to the digital economy, with NIGCOMSAT Ltd handling 579 local government area councils while the rest are to be handled by a sister agency.
According to Mrs. Bantam, NIGCOMSAT Ltd is expected to connect these assigned local government headquarters in Nigeria via satellite coverage leveraging the Ka—band network asset of NigComSat-1R Communication satellite.
“The phase one of the project which has since commenced, covering forty-five local government area councils in the following states of Borno, Cross River, Imo, Kogi, Kwara, Ogun, Sokoto and Zamfara states is gradually reaching the concluding stage.
“In Imo, Zamfara and Cross-River states, VSAT installation in all the allocated local government councils for the first phase has been concluded hundred per cent.
“While in Kogi, the assigned local government councils in the same phase are at ninety per cent conclusion.
“With the resumption of work after the sallah break, the technical team will commence work in all the assigned local government councils of Ogun and Kwara states.
“However, in Borno state, NIGCOMSAT awaits the availability of some logistics, assigned local government councils and contact persons,” the Agency added.
The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has introduced ‘Project 774 LG Connectivity.’
The initiative aims to alleviate restricted internet and digital access by establishing connectivity for all 774 Local Government secretariats across Nigeria.
The Minister, Dr. Tijani had emphasized that the project, co-anchored by the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited and Galaxy Backbone, aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the strategic blueprint of the ministry.
He further stated that the project’s primary objective is to promote inclusive development and enhance access to digital public infrastructure in government offices throughout Nigeria, extending to the remotest areas that might have been underserved or unserved in the past.
“Project 774 LG Connectivity will create at least 300 direct jobs as we deploy nationwide and potentially more jobs indirectly from the increase in digital access.”
The Minister further explained that leveraging strategic partnerships and cutting-edge technology, Project 774 LG Connectivity will furnish local governments with dependable and cost-effective internet access.
He added that this will empower local governments with the necessary resources to enhance public service efficiency, foster transparency, drive economic growth, and elevate citizen engagement.
