The Nigerian Government says all persons of concern especially children in Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps will be incorporated into various skills acquisition activities for self-development.
The Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Imaan Suleiman Ibrahim made this known while hosting the Children of Kuchingoro IDPs camp at a new year party in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
She said this became necessary to enable them to contribute to nation-building.
“Amongst our children here I can see them all happy and with different talents. We will continue to work with them to ensure that we strengthen their talents and their skills we will make them participating and contributing citizens in the society.“ Imaan said
The Federal Commissioner noted that the IDPs and other persons of concern have continued to be the heart beat of the nation adding that the Government was working tirelessly to ensure that they provide a durable solution to the persons of concern.
Ibrahim said part of the durable solution includes providing them with permanent settlement either in their present location or ancestral homes.
“I very much appreciate the fact that this camp is very important to the Commission that was why we had taken it upon ourselves to work with UNHCR to ensure that every stateless person below the age of 18 has a birth registration hence an identity. It is important for you all to know that today is not a day for a long speech, but it is for us to merry and pray for a beautiful year ahead of us.“
She admonished the children to be of good behaviour by being their brother’s keepers.
Highlights of the event was a dancing competition amongst the children and different types of games where the winners received gifts packs as the prize.
The same Children party was replicated in Waru camp, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory and Karu IDPs camp, in Nasarawa State.
