The Nigerian Government has reiterated its commitment to the Ogoni Clean-up programme.

Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi, disclosed this after a meeting with the Chairman of the Ogoni Trust Fund Inc, Dr. Nwielaghi Barieenee and the Project Coordinator of the HydroCarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP Nigeria), Giadom Ferdinand, in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

Ogoni land, situated in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria, has suffered gross environmental contamination from oil-spillage and drilling by multinational oil companies, crude oil theft and illegal crude oil refining.

Furthermore, the source of livelihood of its inhabitants has been impacted, as fishing is their main occupation, being a predominantly riverine area.
