World Athletics Championship: Ese Brume Secures Long Jump Silver Medal

Nigerian athlete Ese Brume has won a Silver medal in the Women’s long jump event, with a final leap of 7.02m at the World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon.

Brume finished second behind German Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo, who continued her dominance in the women’s long jump by soaring to a second successive World Athletics Championship Gold with a final leap of 7.12 metres on Monday.

The silver medal, achieved with a leap of 7.02m, was an improvement for Brume, who had won a bronze medal last time out at the World Championship.

Brazil’s Leticia Oro Melo took bronze with a leap of 6.89m. Mihambo, who has been Brume’s rival in long jump, also beat the Nigerian to Gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Brume’s podium finish came just minutes after Tobi Amusan won a maiden World Championship Gold for Nigeria in the 100m hurdles event. The World Record holder was on hand to celebrate with her compatriot.

Amusan and Brume have so far won a Gold and Silver medals respectively for Team Nigeria at the World Athletics Championships, tagged Oregon 2022, in Eugene, USA.

Nigerian athlete Ruth Usoro was also in action in the women’s Long Jump where she finished 10th overall with a second round attempt of 6.52m.
