CAF Postpones Next Round Of AFCON Qualifiers
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Sunday that the next round of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in September have been postponed, to make room for the African Nations that have qualified for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup in November/December to prepare adequately.
Some qualified African nations would have had to play two AFCON qualifiers in the final window of opportunity in September, instead of playing against opposition from other continents ahead of the World Cup. This necessitated CAF’s Executive Committee’s decision on the postponement.
Senegal, Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco and Tunisia are the African teams who will be playing at the FIFA World Cup finals.
Consequently, the September 2022 AFCON match-day 3 and match-day 4 qualifiers have been moved to 20th – 28th Match , 2023. Match-day 5 will now be on 12 – 20th June, 2023. Match-day 6 will be played on 4th – 12th September, 2023.
The next Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cote d’Ivoire is to scheduled to take place from June 2023 to January 2024.
