Nigerian gov’t pledges to strengthen basic emergency car

The Nigerian Government has pledged to strengthen basic emergency care in the country, noting that this would help to reduce morbidity and mortality.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire stated this while declaring open a five-day training programme organised by the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System in Abuja.

In a press statement signed by the Deputy Director, Media and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Health, Ahmadu Chindaya, the minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage.

The mister said the government is committed to implementing a comprehensive plan for medical emergencies.

Dr. Ehanire, who was represented by the National Programme Manager of NEMSAS Dr. Saidu Dumbulwa said, “The Basis Emergency Care roll-out is the first of its kind, and is in collaboration with the World Health organisation.”

Earlier in his speech, the Senior Special Assistant to the Hon. Minister of Federal Capital Territory on Health matters and Hospital Management, Dr. Ejike Oji, affirmed the readiness of the FCT to assist the Basic Emergency Care Programme to achieve the aims and purpose of its establishment.

He also stressed the need to continue to collaborate with stakeholders and partners to ensure that Nigeria continues to access high-quality training for its health care professionals.

The National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance is an operational arm of the EMT Gateway that coordinates the operationalisation of emergency medical services in Nigeria through domesticated state emergency medical service and ambulance systems in the 36 states and FCT.
