Poultry Association of Nigeria, PAN, has commended poultry farmers in the South East for their contributions in the growth of the Association at the national level.
National President of poultry farmers, Ezekiel Ibrahim, gave the commendation during the 2022 South East Poultry Summit and Expo in Enugu.
Ibrahim, represented by the National Vice President, South East, Innocent Ahanene, noted that agro companies, poultry industries and poultry allied companies in Nigeria cannot flourish without the patronage of South East.
He said PAN has continued to witness tremendous growth since its establishment in 1962, hinting that the summit will enable participants to learn modern ways of doing poultry business.
Strong value chain
The Local Organising Chairman, Izuolisa Onu, in his welcome address, hinted that the poultry industry, over the years, has become a strong value chain in Nigeria’s agro ecosystem.
While emphasizing that the industry in Enugu state is adjudged the fourth largest in the country, the local Organising Chairman, LOC, maintained that the industry’s contribution to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product is substantial.
Onu, who is also the Enugu PAN chairman, pointed out that the association is regulating the activities of its members, to ensure that poultry products in the market are safe for human consumption.
Declaring the summit open, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Matthew Idu, revealed that poultry is one of the agricultural value chain enjoying state government’s intervention.
Idu said he was not surprised that poultry is having a lion share in the Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support, APPEALS, programme.
The Commissioner, while encouraging others to start a poultry business, urged them to learn from those already in the business, especially as it pertains to dos and don’ts of the business.
The summit, which was attended by major stakeholders in the industry, also featured panel discussions.
