India 2022: Tanzania eases into Quarter-Finals.

It was a historical evening for Tanzania as their female U-17 squad cruised into the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India.

They forced Canada to a 1-1 draw in their final Group D match to finish runners-up behind Japan.

The Canadians went into the contest needing a win at DY Patil Stadium.

They also needed some help from Japan, in the form of a victory or tie with France in the other Group D game kicking off simultaneously in Goa, to stay alive at the tournament.

Amanda Allen opened the scoring for Canada from the penalty spot.

But Veronica Mapunda tied it up for Tanzania and they held on to record a landmark achievement.

Tanzania answered in the 35th minute after Canada failed to clear a corner.

The ball hit several bodies and came to Mapunda, whose accurate shot beat Canadian ‘keeper Coralie Lallier.

The Serengeti Girls will now face Champions Spain in the quarter-finals, while Japan tackle difficult Colombia.

That means they will join Nigeria’s Flamingoes – who face the United States – in keeping African interest in the competition.
