The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Paul Odama has warned that destroying billboards and banners are not only going contrary to electoral laws but also a crime against the freedom of expression as enshrined in the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

He reiterated this while discussing with political party executives a few weeks ago, where he compelled them to caution their supporters against the defacement of opposition party campaign posters. In a statement issued by the Police spokesperson, the Police boss warned that any person or group of persons found destroying or defacing any political party billboard would be arrested and prosecuted.

Odama, therefore, advised parents and guidance to warn their children and wards against becoming tools in the hands of some mischievous politicians who are hell-bent on jeopardising the level playing ground the command has promised and worked hard to emplace in Kwara State to ultimately achieve the goal of a peaceful, free and credible elections come 2023.

The Police Commissioner has further directed all the Divisional Police officers in the state to intensify patrols within their Areas of Responsibility (AORs) to ensure that no billboard or postal of any political party is defaced or destroyed. He warned the DPOs to be prepared to face the consequences of dereliction of the directives.

Recall that recently, the alleged supporters of various political parties have destroyed the banners and billboards of rival political opponents in the state. This development has hit up politicking, although they had earlier signed a peace accord to allow peace to reign before, during, and after the elections.
