House of Reps to Probe Judgement Debts Incurred by Government Agencies
The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into the reported huge judgement debts incurred by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government in order to ensure proper payment of top priority ones.
A member of the House, Hon. Lanre Okunlola, expressed this while presenting a motion titled “Motion on the need to resolve the top priority judgment debts incurred by the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government through the issuance of promissory notes amounting to USD 556,754,584.31, GB£398, 526.17 and N226,281,801,881.64.”
“Various MDAs have incurred substantial judgment debts totalling the sum of USD 556,754/584.81/ GB£98,526.17 and N226,281,801,881.64, which poses a significant financial burden on the nation’s finances,” Hon. Okunlola informed his colleagues.
The lawmaker expressed concern that the judgement debts were top priority obligations that required prompt resolution to safeguard the financial stability of government.
The House, in its resolution on the motion, mandated its joint Committee on Aids, Loans and Debt Management, and Justice to investigate the process of issuing promissory notes by the MDAs, and report back within four weeks.
