Spotify unveils “Sound of Nigeria” to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence
Spotify, the popular online streaming platform, has introduced a special soundtrack titled ‘The Sound of Hope’ to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary. This was announced by Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, in a statement released on Monday in Lagos.
Okumu highlighted that Spotify’s “Sounds of Nigeria” campaign celebrates the country’s rich musical heritage, which has served as a unifying force and source of pride for Nigerians. “As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Day, Spotify joins the celebrations by honoring the nation’s vibrant music scene,” she said.

From September 29 to October 3, Spotify users will have access to specially curated music hubs within the Afro and Afrobeats sections, which include playlists such as “Good Old Naija Days,” a nostalgic journey through Nigeria’s timeless hits, “Naija New School,” spotlighting emerging talents, and “Naija No Dey Carry Last,” celebrating the resilience and spirit of Nigerian music.
In a collaboration with renowned content creator and Disc Jockey, Justin UG, Spotify will further enrich the experience with a takeover of the Internet Famous Playlist, introducing a wider audience to fresh Nigerian sounds. The campaign will also feature two new playlists: “Naija Gospel Throwback,” celebrating the roots of Nigerian gospel music, and “Nigerian Highlife,” showcasing the energetic rhythms of this classic genre.
“We are proud to celebrate Nigeria’s independence by amplifying the sounds and stories that resonate far beyond its borders,” Okumu said, adding that the platform remains committed to supporting the nation’s artists and connecting listeners with the essence of Nigerian music.
This initiative reflects Spotify’s ongoing dedication to showcasing Africa’s diverse cultural and musical legacy on a global stage.
