A fire outbreak destroyed numerous shops at the popular Kantin Kwari textile market in Kano State, Northwest Nigeria, on Saturday evening.

The blaze consumed textiles and shops running into billions of Naira.

The inferno began around 7 p.m. local time at Gidan Inuwa Mai Mai on Bayajidda Street and rapidly spread to multiple buildings within the market.

According to the Chairman of the traders’ association Balarabe Tatari while confirming the incident commended the response from the Federal Fire Service, Kano State Fire Service, and private companies, along with support from Sabon Gari, Dawanau, and Singa Markets, which helped prevent the fire from spreading further.

He said, “the prompt intervention of the Kano State Fire Service, the Federal Fire Service, and reinforcements from private companies, Sabon Gari, Dawanau, and Singa Markets put out the fire.”

He also commended the presence of personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant authorities who ensured security at the scene.

Tatari lamented the level of congestion and inadequate access road networks in the market as among the factors that contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

He called on the state government to intensify efforts to clear obstructions that hinder movement and blocked drainage in the market.

Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer Saminu Abdullahi confirmed the fire incident.
