Tomi Olatunbode, Creative Director of Spazio Ideale, in a bold move to redefine the narrative of African heritage, is championing a new wave of sustainable designs that celebrate the continent’s rich cultural identity.
The Newsmen reports that Spazio Ideale, an interior design company based in Nigeria, took the spotlight at the ongoing Ecobank Design & Build Expo 2024.
The theme of the expo is titled: “Building Nigeria Together”.
The expo, which runs until Dec. 1, features over 60 exhibitors showcasing their latest products and innovations.
Spazio Ideale exhibited a booth design that showcases rich designs heritage of Nigeria and Africa, with each element celebrating a nostalgic feel, rooted in timeless craftsmanship.
The company presented a blend of traditional architectural designs. In line with the theme of building Nigeria together, it showed how sustainable design can be used to retain the nation’s culture.
“We need to push sustainable designs that celebrates our African identity, rather than just following Western styles.
“As African designers, we have a responsibility to promote our unique cultural identity and showcase our heritage through sustainable design.
“Spazio Ideale’s participation at the event highlights the transformative potential of interior design in retaining African identity,”
She said that the booth serves as a testament to Afrca’s progression into sustainable design while being modern.
“It also buttresses the company’s commitment to sustainability and redefining the narrative of African heritage with contemporary design.
“The booth also encourages its visitors to embrace the distinct African identity and its available natural resources.
“As sponsors of the event, Spazio Ideale also designed several general spaces within the Expo, impacting the overall attendee experience.
“One of the most captivating spaces was the Helmet Wall, an interactive installation that allowed visitors to stand beneath a towering display of helmets, creating unique and memorable photo opportunities,” she said.
Prominent individuals, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, attended the event and engaged with Olatunbode on the future of African design and sustainability.
