Aisha Bantam, Head of Corporate Affairs at NIGCOMSAT in Abuja, announced in a statement on Wednesday that the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) has partnered with Eutelsat, a global leader in satellite communications, to provide Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services in the nation.

By leveraging the OneWeb LEO network to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity, the partnership positions NIGCOMSAT as Nigeria’s leading satellite service provider, supporting offshore operations, mobile connectivity, and remote communication for government, businesses, and rural communities.

Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, described the partnership as a step in strengthening satellite communication technology in the country.

“This partnership marks a major milestone for NIGCOMSAT, allowing us to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide with OneWeb’s advanced LEO satellite technology.

“Together, we will deliver scalable and reliable connectivity solutions to drive growth across government services, businesses, and communities nationwide,” she said.

According to Egerton-Idehen, the collaboration demonstrates the close ties between France and Nigeria in developing space and satellite technology.

She highlighted that Eutelsat and NIGCOMSAT hope to promote innovation, speed up digital transformation, and increase connection opportunities both inside and outside of Nigeria by pooling their resources.

“NIGCOMSAT is Nigeria’s leading satellite communications provider, dedicated to delivering top-tier satellite services to empower industries and communities.

“Its flagship NigComSat-1R satellite supports critical sectors such as communication, education, health, and security,” she added.

The first fully integrated GEO-LEO satellite operator was created in 2023 by the merger of Eutelsat Group, a world leader in satellite communications, with OneWeb.

The company now has a network of more than 600 LEO satellites and a fleet of 35 geostationary spacecraft.

It provides users with government services, mobile and landline connectivity, and video, including over 6,500 TV stations.
