Nasarawa South senator Tanko Al-Makura, has promised to support peacebuilding through football.
The Senator who was the immediate past governor stated this while briefing journalists in Lafia after the presentation of the trophy to the winner of the unity football competition he organized.
Al-Makura who is currently contesting for the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), said the sport is a veritable tool capable of engaging the youths and bringing unity.
He said it was also meant to provide platforms to the youths to showcase their skills to enable sports stakeholders to discover their hidden talents.
According to senator Al- Makura, the tournament was very important as it was one of the platforms to consolidate peaceful coexistence in the zone and the state.
“Through this competition, I believe we can discover talents who can make a living through football, represent the country and make us proud as well as be a source of hope to the younger generation.
‘I appreciate the response that the competition has attracted right from the grassroots and the level of interest and participation,” he noted.
He also said machinery was put in place from the beginning of the competition to take a record of the performances of every player for any necessary support to excel.
The Senator, therefore, donated N1 million to Water Corporation Football Club of Lafia who emerged winners, and N500, 000 to Lafia Stars Football Club who took second.
Meanwhile, the finals of Senator Umaru Al-Makura Unity Football Competition saw Water Corporation FC defeating Lafia Stars in a penalty after the 90 minutes ended goallessly.
