Abuja: Agency removes barricades to ease traffic congestion

The Federal Capital Territory FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA has opened slip road interchange barricades and other barricades on five major roads in Abuja to allow free flow of traffic.

The roads were barricated in the rainy season as mitigative measures against flooding to prevent loss of lives and properties of the Abuja residents.

The roads are Galadimawa Interchange an area known for flooding, Dogon gada, Dogon ruwa, Apo Dutse, and Gada biyu areas.

The Director, Forecasting Response Mitigation of FEMA, Mrs Florence Wenegieme, while addressing newsmen shortly after unblocking the roads said that the unblocking of the five roads has become imperative due to the importance of such roads to motorist in the FCT.

“The roads were closed on may 11th, due to dangers they pose especially when they are flooded. Now we decided to open them to traffic since the rainy season is over.”

She stressed that the unset of the rain in Abuja for 2023 is usually in the month of May hence the need to block the slip road.

You are all aware of what has been happening around this slip road every year and to the glory of God since 2020, 2021 and 2022 no life has been lost in this area because we made a tradition to block the road during raining season.

“It has become part of our mitigative measures to save lives and properties in the FCT to make sure that this slip road and other vulnerable roads are barricaded to stop vehicular movement, pedestrians and those using motorcycles from using this road during the rainy seasons.” Mrs. Wenegieme said.

While thanking stakeholders and residents for their support, Mrs Wenegieme said the removal of the temporary barricades would go a long way in reducing traffic gridlock.

The Director, Forecasting Response Mitigation of FEMA, Mrs Florence Wenegieme also, announced the commencement of 2023 dry season sensitization of against incessant fire outbreaks in the FCT.

She said, the season is characterized by fire outbreaks stressing the need for residents take caution in handling cooking gas, Petrol, electrical appliances and other inflatable items.

“FCT Emergency Management Agency is calling on residents to make sure all electrical appliances are switched off, ensure you have fire extinguisher in your houses and plazers, do not store petrol in the house, it is dangerous.” Wenegieme advised.

She also warned residents against bush burning and operating businesses under high-tension electric cables.

The Director called for the cooperation of the residents with FEMA in any rescue efforts in the FCT.
