The Executive Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), in the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has said that his administration will ensure the welfare of residents, especially with regards to provision of basic healthcare.
Speaking during a medical outreach at the Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Lugbe, Maikalangu, who was represented by the Supervisory Councillor for Health, Faoye Tunji Toye, implored residents to take advantage of the free medical outreach to carry out different tests, including sugar level, blood pressure, eye test, family planning, among others.
Maikalangu said that the outreach will also be carried out in other parts of the council as the wellbeing of residents is one of the priorities of his administration, even as he said that medical professionals will always be on ground to provide medical advice to the residents.
He said: “I have always said that quality healthcare is the policy thrust of my administration and we will not rest on our oars in ensuring that our residents are healthy and well cared for. A healthy AMAC is a wealthy AMAC.
“This is the second time we are doing this kind of program in AMAC. If you can recall, on April 13, we flagged off free medical services outreach programme at the PHC in Kurudu, where we reached over 1,000 households, including free tests and medications by professional doctors and medical experts.
“The medical outreach is part of our campaign promises. I am not a man that likes going back on my words, so I aim to fulfil my campaign promises. At the flag off in Kurudu, I specifically mentioned Lugbe to be the next place for the medical outreach. That is to show the love my administration has for the good people of Lugbe.
“As the common saying goes, health is wealth. Therefore, this is a free medical outreach programme for everybody that resides in Lugbe. You’re to come here and test your sugar level, blood pressure, eye test, family planning and others. Everything is free of charge. You’re not paying any kobo. We have competent doctors and medical experts that will attend to you, so feel free to be tested and advised accordingly,” he added.
On his part, the Director of Primary Healthcare in AMAC, Dr Modupe Adeyinka, said that the medical outreach will be taken to different communities after Lugbe: in order to give them a sense of belonging.
“As you know, as health professionals, we only care, but it is God that heals. This is an innovation of the Hon. Chairman of AMAC, whereby the health department will go out on an outreach to a particular community to give free medical services to the people. We are lucky here that in Kabusa ward, he chose Lugbe and we will move like that to different communities,” he said.
While showing appreciation for the medical outreach, the District Head of Lugbe, HRH Salihu Gode, said that the medical outreach was the first of its kind, even as he profusely thanked the Chairman for the sense of belonging given to them.
“Words cannot express how I feel with this medical outreach today. It is the first of its kind. We are overwhelmed and grateful that Lugbe was recognised and recommended for the medical outreach by the Chairman. We are very happy with the way he recommended us and we cannot take this magnanimity for granted,” he said.
Highlights of the event included provision of free medical healthcare to over 1,000 children and women of the community, including immunization, COVID-19 vaccination, free malaria testing and meditation, HIV testing and counseling, family planning, eye screening and other medical services rendered by medical doctors and nurses.
