Dr. Patrick Ezie, Chief Executive Officer of Silver-Cross Hospitals and Foundation in Abuja, has stated that the Safe Motherhood Project was established to offer free maternal healthcare to impoverished pregnant women.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, Dr. Ezie said the initiative, inaugurated in January 2024, has already supported over 150 pregnant women who lacked the means to afford vital maternal services.

“If a woman comes in and she is indigent, we provide antenatal services, laboratory tests, and medications free of charge.

“If she requires surgery, including a caesarean section, we also perform that at no cost,” he stated.

Dr. Ezie also disclosed that Silver Cross Hospital maintains a partnership with Global Health Promise, an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to supporting pregnant female sex workers.

Under this collaboration, women within this vulnerable group in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are offered comprehensive maternal care, including free caesarean sections and incubator support for premature infants.

Beyond the Safe Motherhood Project, Dr. Ezie noted that the hospital engages in numerous community health outreaches and works in partnership with other bodies on the treatment of childhood cancers.

“One of the core mandates of Silver Cross Hospital is to ensure access to universal healthcare,” he said.

As part of its special projects for the year, Dr. Ezie revealed that over 50 women across Nigeria have benefitted from free breast cancer surgeries provided by the hospital.
