The Emerging Abuja Projects, organisers of the city’s first-ever Groovy December Festival, say the initiative is targeting up to 20 million tourists within the next four years.

The Project Coordinator, Dr. Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, stated this on Tuesday during the “Walk for Tourism” awareness campaign held across major locations in Abuja ahead of the festival’s official launch.

He explained that the ‘Walk for Tourism’ was organised to energise residents and create excitement ahead of the event.

Ibe-Kalu noted that ‘Groovy December’ will feature more than 35 events designed to showcase Abuja’s vibrant culture, tourism attractions, and entertainment offerings to Nigerians and the diaspora.

He added that 45 coordinators are currently engaging Nigerians abroad to promote the festival and drive international participation.

“Our goal is to position Abuja as a leading destination for cultural tourism,” he said.

Festival activities will include hiking and guided tours at Karshi Waterfalls and Ushafa Village, food festivals, Suya competitions, and football tournaments, experiences curated to appeal to residents, tourists, and families.

Cultural highlights such as the Culture Fest, Miss Groovy December, and Groovy Tombola will also take centre stage. Local vendors will be given space to showcase and sell their products, supporting small business growth during the event.

“We are confident that Groovy December will grow into a signature event for both the city and the nation,” Ibe-Kalu added.

He emphasised the collaboration between private organisers and government agencies, noting that comprehensive security measures have been put in place to guarantee a safe environment.

According to him, the festival is largely funded by private partners, while government agencies will offer technical, professional, and regulatory support.

Ibe-Kalu further revealed that the festival will feature the Emerging Abuja Diaspora Investment Forum on Dec. 17, which aims to promote investment, tourism, and broader economic opportunities.

“This forum will link diaspora investors with local opportunities, ensuring lasting benefits for Abuja,” he said.

Speaking at the FCT Exhibition Pavilion, the Chairman of the Groovy December Central Planning Committee, Imoh Ebong, described the festival as a landmark celebration.

“Groovy December is about re-marketing Nigeria through Abuja showcasing our culture, our people, and our tourism potential,” he said.

He explained that the festival, initiated by the FCT Administration, blends entertainment, culture, and tourism for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors.

“One of the major highlights of today’s event is the Walk for Tourism, which takes participants through key locations in Abuja to signal that something big is coming this December.

“The FCT Pavilion will serve as the festival’s main hub, offering a 24-hour music stage, a dedicated kiddies’ area, and interactive family-friendly spaces.”.
