ABUTH Nursing students treat 500 indigent patients in Zaria

No fewer than 500 patients on Sunday in Zaria, Kaduna State received free medical services from nursing students of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) Zaria. The students under the aegis of Medics World offered the free medical services and Health talk at Tudun Wada, Zaria.

Abdullahi Mohammed-Sani, Secretary- General, Medics World, said the association was founded in 2023 as a subsidiary of the Students Union of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.

He added that the exercise was to reduce the out- of-pocket expenses incurred by the vulnerable groups on the treatment of ailments such as Diabetes, Hypertension and Malaria.

Mohammed-Sani added that the association was working closely with medical consultants from ABUTH who made the prescriptions for the beneficiaries during the event. The secretary-general solicited the community’s prayers towards the successful completion of their studies.

In her remarks, Aisha Bello, Programme Manager of the association, said that plans were being made by the association to roll out its Ramadan (fasting) package for patients admitted at the teaching  hospital.

Bello said the package would include supplies of food items to the vulnerable groups who were on admission at the hospital.

Similarly, Hafsat Yusuf, a member of the association said the idea behind the health talk was to clear some of the misconceptions on diabetes and preach the benefits of regular medical checks for the community to remain healthy.

She said that the exercise was sponsored by the students themselves and urged their colleagues to inculcate the habit of helping the indigents in their chosen fields.

“We don’t have enough but we taxed ourselves to ensure this event holds. We are working with members to scale-up the number of beneficiaries and packages in the subsequent engagements,” Yusuf said.

While responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Alhaji Aminu Mai-Jama’a, Chairman, Coalition of Tudun Wada Development Associations commended the gesture by the students,  describing it as apt and timely.

He described the outreach as impressive based on the large turnout of medical consultants, nursing students and the beneficiaries.
