Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has called on Nigerians to recommit to democratic values, warning against growing polarisation and threats to civil liberties.
In a statement commemorating Democracy Day, Governor Fintiri congratulated Nigerians for their resilience and dedication to the democratic process, describing the country’s democratic journey as “an extraordinary Nigerian story marked by transformation, growth, and the deepening of democracy.”
While highlighting the progress made in wealth creation and national development, Governor Fintiri acknowledged rising concerns about the erosion of freedoms, growing mistrust, and diminishing civic space.
“Rights and values are under attack. “Freedoms are being eroded, and polarisation is intensifying. We must be vigilant.” Fintiri said
He praised the people of Adamawa State for their steadfastness during the 2023 general elections, noting their role in safeguarding democracy.
“As patriotic citizens, you were charged with a historic task: ensuring that democracy was not subverted. You did that very well, and today, your commitment has put our State on a solid foundation,” he stated.
Fintiri emphasized that political authority must always be seen as a public trust.
“It is to be exercised in a manner that brings full accountability to the people by whom and for whom we hold that authority,” Fintiri emphasised
The Governor expressed satisfaction with Nigeria’s democratic maturity and assured the people of Adamawa that his administration’s developmental agenda would be sustained until the end of his tenure.
“That is my solemn promise to our people,” he affirmed.
He also issued a strong warning against attempts to undermine the nation’s constitutional framework, stating that such actions damage democracy, weaken the rule of law, and hinder national progress.
Governor Fintiri urged Nigerians to remain committed to building an inclusive, just, and equitable society. “Together, let us keep building a better Nigeria—for today, and for generations to come,” The Governor concluded.
