The newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Alhaji Muhammad Nura, has reaffirmed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) commitment to delivering a free, fair, credible, and widely accepted election during the forthcoming Ganye Constituency Bye-Election.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement held in Yola, the REC called for cooperation, constructive criticism, and support from political parties, security agencies, and the general public to ensure the success of the exercise.
The bye-election, scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025, follows the passing of the constituency’s elected representative.
Addressing concerns regarding INEC’s preparedness, Alhaji Nura emphasized that logistics and security are being prioritized.
He disclosed that the Ganye Constituency comprises 10 Registration Areas (Wards), 198 Polling Units, and 100,675 registered voters. Of these, 88,963 voters have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), while 11,712 remain uncollected.
To ensure effective coverage, a total of 1,425 personnel will be deployed, including 792 polling officials and 514 security operatives.
As part of security preparedness, the commission has visited key agencies such as the Adamawa State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
These agencies are working closely with INEC to finalise a comprehensive security strategy for the election.
A full security meeting is scheduled for later this week to conclude planning.
Alhaji Nura also highlighted that training for Supervisory Presiding Officers took place on August 1st and 2nd, while training for other ad-hoc staff will be held from August 8th to 10th.
To enhance transparency and efficiency, 198 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines—one per polling unit—will be deployed, alongside adequate backup devices.
Trained Registration Area Technicians (RATECHs) will be on hand to provide technical support.
INEC further confirmed that all political parties participating in the bye-election have peacefully conducted their primary elections between July 17th and 21st, 2025.
Non-sensitive election materials have already been received, with logistics for deployment in place.
With just 11 days to the bye-election, INEC has appealed to all stakeholders and the public to support efforts aimed at ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process in the Ganye Constituency.
In a related development, the Commission announced the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) nationwide. Online pre-registration is set to commence on August 18, 2025, while physical (in-person) capture will begin on August 25, 2025.
The exercise will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, at all INEC local government offices and designated centers across the country.
