The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its readiness to conduct a credible, transparent, and inclusive governorship election in Anambra State on November 8, 2025.

Two point eighty-two million registered voters are expected to participate in the election.

The updated figure, confirmed after the latest Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, marks an increase from 2.6 million voters, reflecting a growing electorate set to choose among 16 political parties and candidates.

INEC made this known during a media engagement forum in Awka, the state capital, which brought together editors, reporters, producers, and digital media professionals to strengthen collaboration and promote accurate electoral reporting.

Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), underscored the media’s vital role in deepening democracy.

As society’s mirror, the media reflects our collective conscience. In elections, your role becomes even more sacred—you help citizens understand not just how to vote, but why their participation matters,” Olumekun said.

He urged journalists to sustain civic education, counter misinformation, and foster public trust through balanced reporting.

Olumekun further promised that “INEC’s preparations were in top gear, covering logistics, staff training, stakeholder engagement, technology deployment, and security coordination.”

All non-sensitive materials have already been delivered to the state, while sensitive materials will arrive in due course under strict security protocols,” he added.

INEC also announced an upgrade to the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the poll.

The Head of ICT/VR in Anambra, Nnaji Chukwuemeka said the enhanced BVAS had proven more reliable in voter accreditation and electronic result transmission. To prevent hitches, backup devices and technical teams will be stationed at all polling units.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, appreciated the media’s collaboration and assured full support for election coverage.

You are a critical part of this process, and we will ensure you are fully equipped to do your job,” she said.

As Anambra prepares for the poll, INEC has reiterated its commitment to uphold electoral integrity and ensure that every vote counts.

With 2.82 million voters set to decide the state’s next leadership, the November 8 election is expected to be a defining moment for democracy in southeastern Nigeria.
