The Anambra State House of Assembly has marked its second anniversary with a special session coinciding with Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze described the occasion as a time for reflection on democratic progress and a renewed pledge to uphold the principles of representative governance.

Since its inauguration in 2023, the 8th Assembly has passed 31 impactful laws, with 30 receiving gubernatorial assent. Notably, over ten of these were private member bills, affirming the legislature’s inclusive approach. In addition, the House adopted 75 resolutions aimed at addressing policy gaps and improving the welfare of Ndi Anambra across diverse sectors.”

Speaker Udeze emphasised that these legislative achievements are not merely symbolic but transformational. Key laws such as the Electricity Law, the Economic Planning Law, and the Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission Law have laid critical foundations for energy access, strategic economic planning, and justice for resource-rich communities.

These statutes bolster security, stimulate economic growth, enhance healthcare delivery, protect workers’ rights, and promote infrastructure development.

“The Assembly’s legislative efforts have supported grassroots initiatives like Operation Udo Ga-achi and the Agunechemba Security Network, contributing significantly to the restoration of peace and safety in local communities. These programs reflect the Assembly’s commitment to security and social stability.

“Beyond legislation, the Assembly has strengthened its oversight functions through 29 standing committees that promote transparency and accountability in governance. The revitalized Public Petitions Committee stands out as a trusted platform for citizens to seek redress, ensuring their voices influence government action. Regular project site visits, budget reviews, and probing inquiries demonstrate the House’s proactive engagement in public service,” he said.

Highlighting strategic planning for the future, Speaker Udeze revealed the Assembly’s intentions to fully digitalize its proceedings, construct a dedicated Legislative Service Commission complex, and expand civic engagement mechanisms.

He says, ” these initiatives aim to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and citizen participation in governance.”
