The governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in the ongoing Anambra State election, Ozo Jeff Nweke, has praised the high voter turnout and the peaceful conduct of the poll, describing it as a positive sign for Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking to journalists shortly after voting at Ogbugbankwa Polling Unit in Awka, Nweke expressed satisfaction with the participation of residents, noting that the large turnout defied earlier fears of voter apathy.
“There is no voter apathy as we haven’t witnessed it. People have turned out en masse to exercise their franchise,” Nweke said. “I am really impressed that voters understand the importance of good governance in our system. Their enthusiasm today is very encouraging.”
The Action Alliance candidate added that the ongoing election reflected a maturing democratic process in Nigeria.
“Indeed, our democracy has come of age. So far, the exercise has been smooth and peaceful, and I hope it remains that way until the close of voting,” he stated.
Nweke also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what he described as improved performance and technical efficiency compared with previous elections.
“I am personally happy with INEC and the way the process is going here in Awka. Although there have been a few minor skirmishes, the conduct so far is commendable,” he said.
As voting continued across Anambra, Nweke called on citizens to maintain peace and patience, emphasizing that credible elections remain vital to consolidating Nigeria’s democratic progress.
