The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) in a significant initiative to enhance tax awareness among the youth,  has successfully launched its inaugural Schools Tax Competition, dubbed ‘The Tax Talk Show.’

This month-long event brought together private secondary schools across Anambra with the aim of educating students on the critical role of taxation in societal development and individual civic responsibility.
The competition, themed “Increasing Tax Awareness in Tomorrow’s Leaders,” underscores AIRS’s commitment to empowering students with knowledge about the importance of tax payment as a pillar of economic growth. During the grand finale held in Awka, the state capital, Governor Charles Soludo, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, emphasized that tax payment should be regarded as a civic duty, vital for the development and prosperity of the state.
“The tax competition highlights the importance of financial literacy and the integral role young people play in shaping the economy,” said Governor Soludo. “This event is more than a contest; it is an educational platform that cultivates a culture of responsibility and empowers our youth with essential knowledge about taxation, finance, and economics.” He added
The governor assured residents that their tax contributions will be utilized judiciously to actualize his vision of making Anambra a livable and prosperous state. He further urged students to share the knowledge gained from the competition with their families and communities.
CEO of AIRS, Chief Greg Ezeilo, echoed this sentiment, stating that the agency will continue to engage schools and other stakeholders in promoting the importance of tax payment through sustained awareness campaigns. Ezeilo expressed optimism that, by leveraging technology and innovative strategies, AIRS aims to generate N10 billion monthly for the state treasury in the near future.
Mrs. Onyeka Amara-Kate, Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Internal Generated Revenue (IGR), highlighted the competition’s success in raising tax awareness among the youth.
“This initiative not only brought the concept of tax closer to the students but also served as a platform for them to engage their families in conversations about civic responsibility,” she stated.
Amara-Kate confirmed that the competition will be held annually to perpetuate the discussion on tax education.
At the conclusion of the event, Lady Hannah International School from Awada-Onitsha was crowned the overall winner, followed by Grace Court International School and Maris Comprehensive College in second and third place, respectively. The triumphant schools received various prizes, including cash rewards and trophies, recognizing their efforts and accomplishments in this inaugural competition.
