The Anambra State Police Command has announced the reactivation of its anti-cult and anti-crime units amidst a resurgence of criminal activities in the state, prompting law enforcement to intensify efforts to maintain peace and security.

The declaration was made by the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, during his visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Awka, the state capital. The visit coincided with the April congress of the union and a summit themed “Finishing Strong,” organised to honour CP Adeoye ahead of his retirement next month.

Highlighting the achievements of the police force under his tenure, CP Adeoye, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Akin Fakorede, emphasised the significant reduction in crime rates through successful raids on criminal hideouts across the state.

He pointed out the decline in cult killings and kidnappings, attributing it to proactive measures implemented by law enforcement.

“If you know Anambra before and now, you would confirm that there is calm now. Before, there were multiple cases of cult killings, kidnappings, and raids on stations here and there, but one of the achievements of the incumbent police is the stoppage of crime, especially cult killings,” he said.

However, CP Adeoye expressed concern over recent isolated cases of cultism, indicating a need for renewed efforts to combat this resurgence. He revealed plans to undertake offensive actions against cult groups, emphasizing the importance of dismantling their networks to maintain peace and security.

Drawing attention to recent discoveries, CP Adeoye disclosed the recovery of weapons, including an AK-47 and Beretta pistols, from suspected criminals. He underscored the potentially catastrophic consequences had these weapons not been intercepted by the police, highlighting the crucial role of law enforcement in preventing further escalation of violence.

He noted improvements in police capabilities, including intelligence gathering and personnel capacity, contributing to enhanced security measures in the state.

Echoing CP Adeoye’s sentiments, Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga highlighted the positive impact of community engagement initiatives on crime prevention.

He emphasised the importance of information sharing and cooperation between law enforcement and local communities in maintaining peace and security.

In his remarks, Anambra NUJ Chairman Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu praised CP Adeoye for his contributions to improving security in the state. He pledged continued support and collaboration between the media and law enforcement to ensure the safety of Anambra residents.
