The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has stepped up its public education campaign in southeastern Nigeria, reinforcing its commitment to reducing road traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities by 10 percent in Anambra State.

The renewed effort was highlighted during a Church Advocacy Programme organised by the FRSC’s RS5.3 Anambra Sector Command at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Igbo-Ukwu, Aguata Local Government Area.

Safer Road Use

The outreach forms part of a broader strategy to deepen community engagement and promote safer road use through grassroots sensitisation.

Addressing the congregation, the Anambra Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekauno, identified key contributors to road crashes in the state.

These include poor pedestrian safety practices, failure to wear crash helmets, overloading and the unsafe mixing of passengers with goods, dangerous road-crossing habits, and reckless driving.

She stressed that strict adherence to traffic regulations remains critical to safeguarding lives and reducing the social and economic burden of road traffic accidents.

“Motorists, commercial drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians must embrace safe road practices and serve as proactive ambassadors of road safety within their communities

Observing traffic rules is not optional, it is a shared responsibility that saves lives,” Asekauno said.

Road traffic injuries remain a major public health and development challenge across Nigeria and many low- and middle-income countries.

According to safety experts, consistent enforcement of traffic laws, proper use of protective gear such as seat belts and crash helmets, avoidance of overloading, and responsible driving behaviour are among the most effective measures for preventing crashes and fatalities.

The church-based advocacy programme featured the distribution of informational flyers and other awareness materials reinforcing key safety messages.

Worshippers also participated in an interactive session, raising questions and seeking clarification on various road safety concerns.

Responding on behalf of the church, the officiating priest, Reverend Emmanuel Nwankwo, commended the FRSC for its outreach and pledged the church’s continued support in promoting road safety awareness among its members.

Officials of the RS5.35 Igbo-Ukwu Unit Command, along with staff and Special Marshals, attended the event, underscoring collaboration between the road safety agency and faith-based organisations in advancing safer roads.

The FRSC says it will continue to intensify traffic education campaigns, enforcement activities and community partnerships as part of a sustained effort to curb road crashes and foster a culture of responsible driving across Anambra State and beyond.
