Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has dismissed criticisms by opposition parties regarding his performance in office in the past seven years.

Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and the Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, had described the Obiano administration as a disaster.

They spoke in separate statements in Awka as the governor marked his seventh year in office without fanfare.

They said the Awka International Cargo Airport, the Awka Township Stadium, the 10,000-capacity International Conference Centre in Awka as well as three flyovers were the only signature projects of the governor within the period.

The state PDP Publicity Secretary, Nnamdi Nwangwu, in a statement said, “Under the watch of Obiano, the status of Anambra State as having the best road network in Nigeria has suffered a severe blow; the roads in the state have become death traps, old roads are not maintained and new ones are not constructed.

“At a time in recent past, one can move from the farthest point in the state to Awka, the state capital in less than one hour, that is no longer the case today.”

On his part, Ngige said, “We (APC) will use our broom to sweep him and his party out of Government House.

“We want to drive away governor-do-nothing, who’s sitting down there. You can’t be a governor and just cross your legs and be playing music and say you’re a governor.”

Reacting, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, James Eze said, “The opposition are marooned; they are at sea. Governor Obiano did not hold any celebration.  What the governor did was to mark his 7th anniversary walking on his feet all day. He went on inspection of the Anambra International airport project that is fast becoming a monument to visionary leadership in this part of Africa.

“So, if the opposition has run out ammunition to fire at Governor Obiano, they should tell the people of Anambra State what they can do if they were to get a chance to run the affairs of the state.”
