The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, North West Nigeria, has elected a new executive committee as part of broader efforts to strengthen the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At a well-attended state congress held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, delegates chose Umar Doguwa as the new State Chairman through a consensus arrangement.
Also elected were Salisu Ahmed as Deputy Chairman, Prof. Yusuf Muhammed Bichi as State Secretary, and Prof. Nura Yaro as Assistant Secretary, alongside other officials representing the three senatorial zones of the state.
The results were jointly announced by the Chairman of the National Congress Committee, Latep Dabang, and the State Congress Committee Chairman, Engr. Rabiu Bichi.
The exercise was conducted in the presence of officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as well as members of the party’s National Congress Committee, underscoring its procedural credibility.
About 2,420 accredited delegates participated in the congress, which drew prominent political figures, including Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, members of the National Assembly and state legislators, among other party stakeholders.

In his acceptance speech, the new APC Chairman in Kano, Umar Doguwa, pledged to foster unity and inclusiveness within the party.
He assured members of a collective approach aimed at repositioning the APC for future electoral victories and sustainable development.
“We will work together to build a formidable party capable of delivering success at the polls and advancing the interests of our people,” Doguwa stated.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in his remarks, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising Kano’s development and strengthening party cohesion.
He stressed that the APC in the state would continue to align with federal structures to attract greater democratic dividends.
The governor also assured the new leadership of full support as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 electoral cycle.
In a farewell address, former State Chairman Abdullahi Abbas expressed gratitude to party members for their support over his ten-year tenure and urged them to extend the same cooperation to the new executive for the continued growth of the party.
It is expected that the outcome of the Kano APC congress in one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states could play a decisive role in shaping the APC’s national calculations ahead of the next general elections.
