Top political figures in Nigeria have gathered in Gombe State as former Governor, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, gave his daughter, Hafsat, in marriage.

The high-profile ceremony attracted serving and former office holders from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who used the occasion to emphasise the need for national unity beyond political affiliations.

Among the dignitaries present were the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; former Senate President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki; and several incumbent and former governors from both the APC and the PDP. All echoed the sentiment that Nigeria’s unity must take precedence over political divisions.

Senate President Akpabio conveyed his deep appreciation to Gombe State Governor, Mohammad Yahaya for the warm reception extended to guests, describing it as ‘a rare display of political sportsmanship and hospitality in Nigeria’s current political landscape.’

Senator Akpabio said: “We thank you for hosting us and for the exceptional hospitality shown in honour of one of us. It is evident that, under your leadership, Gombe State has demonstrated an admirable level of political tolerance and unity.”

He further noted that the presence of numerous senators from across party lines was a testament to Senator Dankwambo’s unifying spirit and a reflection of the peaceful, welcoming environment that Gombe offers.

Building efforts

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas also lauded Governor Yahaya’s bridge-building efforts, highlighting the symbolism of unity inherent in the marriage.

This is a union between families from different political backgrounds. It exemplifies what Nigeria truly needs—unity across party, ethnic, and religious lines. Governor Inuwa’s role in this event speaks volumes about his character and vision for a united Nigeria,” he said.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki commended Governor Yahaya’s humility and solidarity, noting that ”he consistently stands by the people in both joyous and challenging times, regardless of political leanings.”

Land of harmony

In his address, Governor Yahaya expressed pride in hosting the occasion, noting that Gombe is known as a land of harmony, mutual respect, and warm hospitality.

He used the opportunity to reiterate the values of unity, tolerance, and community spirit, which he said “are the defining characteristics of Gombe State.”

Here in Gombe, we believe in standing together as one people. Today’s occasion reflects who we are, accommodating, peaceful, and united. I hope that this celebration will further strengthen the bonds that connect us, not only as leaders and colleagues, but as brothers and sisters committed to a greater Nigeria,” the Governor stated.

In his vote of thanks, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo expressed heartfelt appreciation to Governor Yahaya for his generous support, camaraderie, and solidarity throughout the wedding celebrations.

I wish to specifically thank the Governor for standing by me at this historic moment. His contributions, both in kind and in spirit, have been instrumental in the success of this event. This is true leadership and brotherhood, and I am deeply grateful,” Senator Dankwambo said.

Several speakers praised Governor Yahaya’s decision to personally organise and host the reception, describing it as ‘a shining example of leadership that transcends partisanship.’

The gesture, they noted, further cements his reputation as a unifying figure and a servant leader committed to peace, respect, and social cohesion.

The wedding fatiha between Hafsat Dankwambo and Ashraf took place earlier at the palace of the Emir of Gombe, Dr Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III.
