The Nigerian Army has organised a one-day sensitisation lecture for students in Sokoto State, in an effort to strengthen civil-military relations.

This is part of the activities lined up for the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), highlighting the military’s role in national development.

The event, held at Idris Koko Technical College, aimed to educate students on the role of the military in national development, promote discipline, and expose them to career opportunities within the Nigerian Army.

Addressing the students, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, said the engagement would bridge the gap between the military and civilian population, especially the youth.

General Oluyede, who was represented by the Commander, Equipment and Support, 8 Division, Brigadier General Aliyu Musa, said the sensitisation was designed to enlighten secondary school students about the Army’s contribution to national security and development.

“The Nigerian Army believes in engaging the younger generation, not only to inform them about career paths in the military but to instil values of discipline, patriotism, and national service,” he stated.

He commended the school management for the high student turnout, describing it as a reflection of the confidence reposed in the Army, and encouraged the students to consider military careers.

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Science and Technical Education, Professor Attahiru Sifawa, also commended the Army for its initiative. Represented by the Director of Quality Assurance in the Ministry, Malam Mukhtar Sidi Isah, he said the sensitisation was timely, given the growing influence of technology in modern military operations.

“This school is a technical college, and the Army is moving in that direction. Students now have the chance to interact directly with officers and learn more about military life, training, and roles during peace and conflict,” he said.

He expressed hope that the collaboration between the Army and the Ministry would be sustained in the interest of national security.

Highlights of the event included lectures delivered by officers from various units under the 8 Division Headquarters on the following topics:

  • The Need to Be Patriotic Citizens of Nigeria

  • The Importance of Imbibing the Principles of Honesty and Integrity at All Times

  • The Need to Avoid Criminal Associations and Criminality

  • Career Opportunities in the Nigerian Army and the Criteria for Selection and Enlistment

  • Civil-Military Relations and Development Projects Undertaken by the Nigerian Army

The event also featured the presentation of educational materials to the school’s principals and the distribution of souvenirs.
