The Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI has launched a full investigation into the death of a civilian, Abdulrahman Mustapha, who was shot by troops on 22 March 2026 in the Polo Axis near the Federal High Court, Maiduguri, Borno State, North-East Nigeria.

The incident, which occurred around 11:40 p.m., initially sparked social media claims that the military had carried out an extrajudicial killing of an unarmed man returning from a Sallah visit.

In a statement on Wednesday, the military’s Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, said the allegations were being treated with utmost seriousness. He confirmed that an impartial investigation is ongoing to establish the facts and determine whether troops complied with operational procedures.

However, Colonel Uba noted that preliminary indicators suggest the incident may have underlying security dimensions.

According to initial findings, the deceased allegedly attempted to snatch a soldier’s rifle a move the military described as indicative of hostile intent.

He added that the individual was found in possession of multiple identification cards bearing different names, including a foreign identity card from the Republic of Niger.

Troops also reportedly recovered a bottle of Tutolin syrup and wraps of a substance believed to be cannabis sativa.

Two unidentified women who were with the deceased at the time fled the scene and are currently being sought by security forces.

“These preliminary details remain subject to verification and should not be construed as definitive conclusions,” Lt. Col. Uba said, assuring the public that due process would be followed.

Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of human rights, while continuing its mandate to maintain security in the North-East theatre.
