Association Praises Efforts In Combating Hunger

The Nigerian Plant Breeder Association, NPBA, says it has made substantial progress in combating the burden of hidden hunger, particularly among vulnerable populations in Nigeria.

Prof. Chiedozie Egesi, President, NPBA, disclosed this at the maiden conference of the association on Monday in Abuja.

The theme of the conference is, “Advancing Plant Breeding through Biotechnology Innovations: Fostering one Health and Nigeria’s Agenda 2050.”

He said the association’s commitment to biofortification had a profound impact on improving nutrition and health outcomes.

Egesi said tailoring plant breeding for climate smart agriculture had allowed the association to adapt to the challenges posed by a changing climate.

“We are developing crop varieties that are better suited to withstand extreme weather conditions and ensure the continuity of agricultural production.’’

He said that through the association’s effort, it was harnessing plant breeding to enrich plant-based diets with essential proteins.

Egesi added that the association efforts would not only improve nutrition but also promote a healthier lifestyle among the citizenry.

According to him, Nigerian plant breeders have an opportunity to derive benefits from their hard work, and farmers can access the best of genetics and traits in the varieties they grow.

He said that NPBA was working to ensure holistic plant, human, and environmental health as they were essential for a sustainable future.

Egesi said “the association had actively leveraged biotech-aided plant breeding to align with Nigeria’s Agenda 2050.”

He added that NPBA would ensure that its efforts contributed directly to the nation’s long-term sustainability and prosperity.
