Associations Celebrate Music Legend King Sunny Ade at 79

The Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) have paid glowing tributes to legendary Nigerian musician, Sunday Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Adé, as he marked his 79th birthday.

In separate interviews, leaders of the two associations extolled the virtues of the Juju icon and his immense contributions to African music.

National President of PMAN, Pretty Okafor, described KSA as a living legend who has consistently used his works to promote peace and unity. He noted that the music maestro’s humility, talent, and dedication continue to inspire generations of artistes across Africa and beyond.

King Sunny Adé is a legend who has lived through his age in peace and harmony. He is humble and dedicated, and we still have a lot to learn from his character and work ethic. As a former president of PMAN, he has continued to support and motivate us,” Okafor said.

Also speaking, the National Secretary of AGN, Abubakar Yakubu, praised KSA as an African music ambassador whose timeless tunes transcend generations.

His voice, body, soul and everything about him is music. His trajectory in Nigerian music is a success story for younger generations to emulate. On behalf of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, I wish the legendary King Sunny Adé a happy 79th birthday,” Yakubu said.

He urged upcoming Nigerian artistes to draw inspiration from the life and achievements of the septuagenarian.

Born on September 22, 1946, in Ondo State, Sunday Adegeye is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist regarded as one of the first African pop musicians to gain international acclaim.

His 1980 album Syncro System earned him his first Grammy nomination, making him the first Nigerian to be nominated for the prestigious award.

Over the decades, King Sunny Adé has received numerous honours, including induction into the Hard Rock Café Hall of Fame in 2016 and The Headies Hall of Fame in 2021, cementing his place as one of the most influential musicians of all time.
