Autism Day: Women Affairs Minister Advocates for Inclusive Policies, Opportunities

The Minister of Women Affairs Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim has reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to advancing policies and initiatives that support neurodiverse individuals.

In a message commemorating World Autism Awareness Day, the Minister noted that inclusive policies, education, and economic opportunities are crucial in empowering individuals with autism and other neurodivergent conditions to contribute meaningfully to society.
She called on stakeholders, families, caregivers, and the broader society to embrace neurodiversity and create an enabling environment where persons of diverse abilities, could thrive.
“Together, let us reaffirm our dedication to a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria.”
Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted that the 2025 theme, “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” underscores the critical connection between neurodiversity and global sustainability efforts.
“It highlights the need for inclusive policies, education, and employment opportunities that empower individuals with autism and other neurodivergent conditions to contribute meaningfully to society.”
She emphasized that fostering acceptance and removing barriers, would move Nigeria closer to achieving the SDGs; particularly those related to quality education “SDG 4”, decent work and economic growth “SDG 8”, and reducing inequalities “SDG 10”.
World Autism Awareness Day, observed annually on April 2, aims to promote understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The day serves as a reminder of the need for a more inclusive society, recognizing the unique strengths and potential of individuals with autism.
The official color of World Autism Awareness Day, blue, symbolizes calmness, acceptance, and understanding.
The observance was first established by the United Nations in 2007, to reinforce global commitments to raising awareness and advocating for the rights and well-being of people with autism.
