The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has warned residents and traders in the territory against selling kerosene and petrol under high voltage transmission lines or beside power transformers.
The Director Forecasting, Response and Mitigation in the Agency, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme gave the warning at the continuation of the Agency’s dry season sensitization at Maitama Ultra-Modern Market, Kubwa.
Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, lamented that illegal structures removed around the market in 2022 had been brought back.
“Today we are in Kubwa market, you will recall that sometime in 2022, there was a kerosene explosion in this Kubwa village market and to be specific this location. Where a lady was selling kerosene and another woman was frying akara and there was an explosion and we were involved in the rescue operations.
“Looking in front of us we see a generator mechanic and somebody selling kerosene right beside a transformer and under a high tension wire.
“This is why the Minister of the FCT, Malam Mohammed Musa Bello, his Minister of State counterpart, Dr Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, the permanent secretary in the FCTA, Mr Olusade Adesola and the DG FEMA directed us to come out immediately to advice residents on how to mitigate incidences of fire outbreaks in the Territory,” she said.
