Bayero University Kano (BUK), one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Nigeria is seeking partnership with Voice of Nigeria, VON on training and research.

This was made known as a delegation from the University visited the headquarters of VON, the country’s external radio service, in Abuja on Wednesday.

The delegation, led by Professor Umar Farouk, the Dean of Communications at BUK, congratulated Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, the newly appointed Director General of VON, who is also an alumnus of the University.

Mallam Ndace, who assumed office in October 2023, said he was honoured by the visit and expressed appreciation for his alma mater, which he said had created a safe and conducive environment for learning and culture.

Welfare improvement

The DG also said he was committed to improving the welfare and performance of the staff at VON, which broadcasts to Africa and the rest of the world in various languages.

“No matter how good the machine is, it is the human being that makes the machine work. That’s why I am placing premium on welfare, training and retraining so people can keep delivering in their career,” Mallam Ndace said.

Professor Umar Farouk praised the VON DG for his achievements and vision, saying he saw a bright future for VON and hoped to explore opportunities for partnership with the radio service.

He said; “We have several levels of partnership opportunities with VON. First we are a research and training institute. So we can engage in training and research with Voice of Nigeria. We can also engage in programme exchange. We have radio and tv studios and we broadcast live. That too can be explored for interactions among several opportunities.”

He also invited Mallam Ndace to attend a conference that would soon hold in BUK, where he will be featured as an alumnus and guest.

The visit was part of BUK’s efforts to strengthen its ties with the media industry and other stakeholders in the country.
