The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has commended Nigeria’s President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for strengthening the operational capability of the Nigerian Army through the provision of sophisticated weapons and critical military equipment to address the country’s evolving security challenges.

The commendation came during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, at the Benue State Government House in Makurdi on Thursday, where discussions focused on ongoing security operations and the need to consolidate stability across the North Central region.

A statement issued by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, confirmed that the engagement highlighted both federal support for military modernisation and the importance of state-level cooperation in strengthening internal security responses.

During the visit, the Army Chief assured the state government that the Nigerian Army is expanding its operational capacity to improve security outcomes in Benue and surrounding areas. He noted that the acquisition of modern weapons and combat enablers, facilitated through the support of the President, is expected to significantly enhance the effectiveness of troops confronting armed groups and other security threats.

The Army Chief also commended the people and government of Benue State for their resilience and continued support to security agencies despite persistent challenges affecting parts of the state. He particularly acknowledged the cooperation extended to troops under Operation WHIRL STROKE, noting that sustained community support has contributed to progress recorded in ongoing operations.

Lieutenant General Shaibu further urged the state government and residents to maintain close collaboration with the military and other security agencies, stressing that effective security management depends on strong synergy between armed forces, civil authorities and local communities.

Responding, Governor Alia described the Army Chief’s visit as timely and reassuring at a period when intensified security coordination is required. He praised the Nigerian Army for its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property while welcoming the deployment of additional troops to reinforce ongoing operations within the state.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to support security agencies as they intensify operations aimed at curbing criminality and restoring lasting peace across Benue State.

The engagement forms part of the Army leadership’s ongoing operational tour of key theatres as efforts continue to strengthen stability across Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
