A former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Benue State, Jeffrey Kuraun, has unveiled a set of practical initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s response to security challenges.

Speaking during the 19th Distinguished Public Lecture at the University of Mkar in Gboko, themed “Navigating an Uncertain Future: Courage, Creativity, and Responsibility in Times of Crisis”, Kuraun proposed innovation labs, wellness centres, civic engagement programmes, and peace fellowships as strategic tools for national stability.

He stressed the need for “Courage, creativity, and responsibility” in addressing current challenges and urged the government to ensure security, justice, and transparency in its disaster response efforts.

Kuraun called on students to become visionary leaders and accept collective responsibilities in building a more secure and just society. “We must recognise hardship while fostering courage and vision in our youth,” he said, while charging the university community to lead efforts toward national renewal.

He said communities across Benue and other parts of Nigeria continue to face complex security issues, and called for inclusive governance strategies that engage the Federal Government, traditional rulers, religious institutions, and community stakeholders. “We must move beyond rhetoric to achieve tangible results,” he added.

While acknowledging previous efforts by successive governments, Dr Kuraun advocated for a more holistic and collaborative approach, stating that all Nigerians must take responsibility for sustainable solutions. “Unity and cooperation are essential to overcome the threats we face,” he said.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Mkar, Professor Zacharys Gundu, described Dr Kuraun’s lecture as “thought-provoking and revitalising,” urging all stakeholders, including government actors, to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Dr Kuraun’s background in the oil and gas sector, along with his philanthropic work through the Jeffrey Kuraun Foundation, further highlights his commitment to positive change in Benue State and beyond.
