A UK-funded programme, “Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria” (SPRiNG), is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Benue State Government in North Central Nigeria.

The partnership aims to promote peace and food security through strategic collaboration.

This was among the resolutions reached during a consultative meeting held in Makurdi to finalise the details of the collaboration, with key stakeholders from various sectors in attendance.

The Project Coordinator, Dr Shalem Shiekuma, explained that the project targets food insecurity in areas affected by violence, particularly in Logo, Agatu and Gwer West Local Government Areas.

“The focus of the project is on building peace through strategic alliances, particularly in areas where conflict has led to food crises,” he said.

Dr Shiekuma emphasised the need to develop a security plan for the state to promote resilience and peace in affected communities.

He stated that the partnership will involve close collaboration between implementing partners and the state government.

Dr Shiekuma highlighted the significance of this collaboration and expressed confidence in the support of stakeholders, including traditional rulers.

Speaking on his part, Dr Edward Amalia, a participant in the meeting, expressed optimism about the project’s potential impact across multiple sectors.

He noted that the initiative enjoys the backing of trusted partners committed to its successful implementation.

It is recalled that the SPRiNG project seeks to address issues related to conflict, climate impacts, and governance in Nigeria’s North-West and North-Central regions.

Through local peacebuilding initiatives and partnerships with government and civil society, the project aims to foster a more peaceful and resilient future for the country.
