Emir’s Palace: Civil Society Organisation Urges Kano Police To Probe Attack

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) has called on the Kano State Police Command to ensure proper investigation into attack on the palace of Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi.

It expressed worry police over silence and perceived inaction 48 hours after the attack on the palace.

The CSOs expressed concern over what they described as a “deafening silence” by security agencies following the violent invasion of the Kofar Kudu Palace on Sunday.

The incident reportedly led to the destruction of property, including two police operational vehicles, and left one palace guard with machete wounds.

The attack is alleged to have been carried out by supporters of the deposed Emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.

In a joint statement signed by leaders of eight different civil society groups, the coalition described the incident as a deliberate attempt by unpatriotic elements to plunge the state into chaos.

The coalition said the worsening situation and lack of police response could compromise the relative peace Kano has enjoyed in recent times.

According to the CSOs, the attack occurred when a convoy believed to belong to the dethroned Emir Bayero, returning from a condolence visit to the family of late business magnate Alhaji Aminu Dantata, diverted from its usual route to pass directly in front of the Emir’s Palace at Kabara.

They claimed the deliberate detour led to violent clashes allegedly instigated by elements within the entourage.

The CSOs provided a detailed account of the damages and losses from the incident, includes three vandalized police vehicles (NPF 182D Mopol 9 and NPF 195D Mopol 52), Two damaged motorcycles belonging to security personnel, the palace’s main iron gate and a shattered police security post at the palace,

The theft of sensitive police assets, including a full police camouflage uniform, a pair of boots, and a bullet magazine among items lost.

The CSOs are demanding for the Immediate investigation into the attack, vandalism, and assault on security agents and civilians as well as Arrest and prosecution of all those responsible.

It also demanded for the Recovery of all stolen police assets and Reinforcement of security around Emir Sanusi II and his residence.

The CSO’s called for urgent action by the police to uphold peace and order in the state.

Signatories to the statement include Mustapha Abdullahi (Kano Digital Media Rangers), Comrade Salisu Gambo (Youth Mobilization by Media), Alhaji Suleiman Idris (Northern Youth Assembly), AbdulKadir Abubakar (One Voice Development Initiative), Aisha Mohammad Shetimma (Beyond Border Alliance), Barr. Badamasi Gandu (Kano First Forum), and Ambassador Abbas Abdullahi (Convener, One Kano Agenda).

NAFDAC Uncovers Illegal Operation In Lagos

0

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal operation involving the use of fake chemicals, expired food flavourings, fertilizers, and repackaged raw materials in Lagos.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos, NAFDAC said its operatives raided the illegal facility located in the Alapere area of Ketu. The operation led to the arrest of three suspects and the sealing of three warehouses used for the illicit activities.

According to the statement, the operatives were led by the agency’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade.

The raid was carried out following credible intelligence about a criminal network endangering public health.

This is one of the campaigns our agency is carrying out to protect the health of Nigerians.

“We received information that some individuals were pretending to run a legitimate business, but in reality, they were engaging in a serious criminal activities that put people’s lives at risk.

“As an agency set up by law to stop such crimes, we stepped in to make sure those involved are brought to justice. The main offence here is the sale of expired chemicals,” Iluyomade said.

He said that chemicals are known as raw materials, with some being precursors used to make other chemicals, while others go directly into the production of goods people consume.

“If an expired chemical is used, it is impossible to get a safe or effective final product, making it a serious health risk,” Iluyomade was quoted as saying.

It further said that dangerous chemicals that pose serious security threat and are expected to be handled only by government agencies or licensed end users were discovered.

The statement said that some of the expired food additives found at the location were from a registered company that was licenced to import the product, noting that the company will be investigated

“Fertilisers among the items were found, these items required clearance from the National Security Adviser before anyone can distribute them. Yet, someone has been stocking and selling them freely.

“Another major concern is the expired food-grade products we found and the disturbing part is that they came from a registered company in Nigeria. That company has the legal right to import them. “The expired batch ended up with a third party who is not a manufacturer and this raises serious questions about how some multinationals are operating in this country,” the statement said.

It also said that the three warehouses belonging in the same location were sealed while the total value of the fake and expired items seized was not less than N1billion.

The Director of Chemical Evaluation and Control, Dr leonard Omokpariola in the statement said it was unfortunate that some of the items found at the three warehouse were strictly controlled items not expected to be in the possession of an individual.

Omokpariola urged companies to always follow NAFDAC guidelines on how to handle such items.

Zamfara Government Launches Measles Vaccination Campaign

0

The Zamfara State Ministry of Health, in partnership with the international humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), has launched an emergency measles vaccination campaign in Zurmi Local Government Area, located in northwestern Nigeria.

The campaign follows a spike in measles cases in the area, which has so far claimed the lives of 24 children this year.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Gusau, MSF’s Head of Mission, Mr. Abdullahi Ali, revealed that most of the children who died were under five years old and had not received the measles vaccine.

According to Ali, the six-day campaign, which began on Monday, targets children between the ages of six months and five years old.

“The goal of the campaign is to stop the spread of measles quickly and prevent more deaths.

“During the campaign, the MSF teams will also check children for signs of malnutrition, using a simple arm measurement (MUAC) and refer those who are undernourished to nearby health Centres for treatment.

“As of early May, more than 1,600 suspected measles cases have been reported across all 11 wards in Zurmi LGA,” he stated.

He further explained that the number of measles cases was higher than usual and had passed the level considered an epidemic.

“Many of the children, who became seriously ill, had other health problems like eye infections, malaria, and poor nutrition, which made their condition worse. The death rate is currently 1.2 per cent,” he added.

According to him, to reach as many children as possible, MSF is using both fixed vaccination sites and mobile teams that can travel to remote and hard-to-reach areas.

“The aim is to vaccinate at least 95 per cent of children in the target age group to protect the wider community and stop the outbreak,” Ali explained.

He added that based on the reports of previous vaccination campaigns in June 2024, only 59 per cent of children were reached due to a shortage of vaccines and security issues in some areas.

“The current outbreak is worst in communities like Zurmi town, Dauran Birnin Tsaba, Mayasa Kuturu, and Rukudawa, where regular vaccination services are limited and access to healthcare is difficult.

“Children in Zurmi are facing a double crisis of disease and hunger.

“We are seeing a sharp rise in measles cases, along with high levels of malnutrition, which makes children even more vulnerable.” He said.

Ali added that a nutrition screening carried out in June 2024 showed that one in every four children in Zurmi was undernourished.

Still referencing the screening, he said that more than four per cent of the children were severely malnourished, well above emergency levels set by the World Health Organisation.

The MSF-run treatment centre at Zurmi General Hospital continues to receive more and more children with serious nutrition-related complications,” he explained.

The MSF head, therefore, called on partners and health authorities to support this urgent response and help ensure that every child in the Zurmi area gets the care and protection he needs.

Constitution Review Will Guarantee Just Federation -Senate President

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio said the review of the 1999 Constitution embarked upon by the 10th National Assembly will guarantee the evolution of a more just, united and forward looking federation.

Senator Akpabio made the remarks during the South-South Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

He said the on-going public hearing is not merely a formality, but a democratic rite and a solemn moment in which the people, not politicians alone, speak into the soul of the nation.

“Today’s event is not merely a formality. It is a democratic rite—a solemn moment in which the people, not politicians alone, speak into the soul of the nation. It is an affirmation that in a democracy, every voice counts.

“Let us not forget that democracy is a work in progress. No constitution is eternal in its original form, and no democracy is perfect—because man himself is not perfect.

“But it is in our collective pursuit of perfection—that more perfect union—that the true beauty of democracy lies.

“Therefore, the review of our Constitution is not a sign of weakness but of strength. It is not a complaint against the past, but a commitment to the future.

“We amend not to abandon but to realign—to adapt our national charter to the changing realities, dreams and demands of the good people of Nigeria”.

“Every Nigerian is a stakeholder in Nigeria’s democracy. This public hearing is a testament to the Senate’s unwavering belief that truth emerges not from silence but from dialogue; not from monologue but from the aggregation of honest opinions.

“That is why we are here—not as party men, but as patriots. Not as political actors, but as nation-builders,” he said.

Also speaking, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, said the Constitution review was an important moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey that must lead to a restructuring of the country.

The Governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi said the zonal public hearing is not a mere procedural step in legislative activity but truth, and also important moment in the country’s democratic journey.

“This zonal public hearing is not a mere procedural step in legislative activity. It is, in truth, an important moment in our democratic journey” he said.

The exercise held simultaneously in five geopolitical zones across the country except in the North West, which was postponed till later date.

The review is aimed at gathering Nigerians’ input on the proposed constitutional amendment in the country’s law.

It will examine critical national issues, including local government autonomy, electoral and judicial reforms, state creation, state police and inclusive governance among others.

The bill, which is titled “A Bill for a Law to Establish the Kaduna State Mining Development Company, 2025,” was approved during a plenary session led by the Kaduna State House of Assembly’s Speaker, Rt Hon. Yusuf Liman.

During the session, Speaker Liman underscored the Kaduna State House of Assembly’s dedication to sustainable socio-economic growth, stressing the need for effective management of the state’s abundant natural resources.

Hon. Danlami Usman, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, presented the bill’s report. He highlighted the legislation’s dual objectives of maximizing economic benefits from mining activities and curbing illegal mining practices.

“The new company will act as a revenue-generating platform while establishing a standing committee dedicated to identifying and prosecuting violators of mining regulations,” according to him.

However, the committee will be tasked with providing strategic recommendations aimed at enhancing transparency and governance within the state’s mining sector.

Local communities, which will have official representation on the standing committee, will play a vital role in addressing their concerns and grievances, ensuring that the benefits of mining activities extend to them.

Cholera Outbreak Escalates In South Sudan, Says WHO

0

The World Health Organisation (WHO), says it is working with health authorities in South Sudan and partners to scale up cholera prevention efforts, including a vaccination campaign.

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan, Anita Kiki Gbeho, said in a statement on Tuesday, “Now, more than ever, collective action is needed to reduce tensions, resolve political differences and make tangible progress in implementing peace.”

Since the cholera outbreak was declared in October 2024, UN agencies and partners have documented over 80,000 cholera cases and 1,400 deaths.

This is in addition to regional outbreaks of mpox, hepatitis, and measles among other communicable diseases.

South Sudan, the world’s youngest country is experiencing its worst and longest cholera outbreak on the eve of the fourteenth anniversary of its independence.

The outbreak which started in September 2024 and was confirmed a month later comes amidst a protracted humanitarian crisis exacerbated by rising intercommunal violence, climate shocks such as flooding and catastrophic hunger.

South Sudanese authorities, civil society, and UN agencies held an inter-ministerial meeting on Monday to discuss what they called an “alarming escalation” in the spread of the outbreak.

“This is not merely a public health crisis, but a multi-sectoral emergency exacerbated by flooding, displacement, and limited access to basic services,” the ministers wrote in a communiqué released.

The group resolved to facilitate unimpeded humanitarian access to areas which already have outbreaks and to other areas at risk for outbreaks. The Government of South Sudan will coordinate these efforts.

Partners will also work to preposition materials, improve water and sanitation infrastructure and coordinate proactive and reactive vaccination campaigns.

With the peak of the rainy season on the horizon, the next eight weeks are critical in containing and mitigating the outbreak before severe flooding begins.

“Time is of the essence to prevent a further escalation of the outbreak,” the officials wrote.

The UN and its partners are working quickly to preposition emergency supplies, especially in these previously low-risk areas, but they are hampered by funding shortfalls.

Agencies estimate that they will need $1.69 billion of which they have only received $368 million to address the many intersecting humanitarian needs in the country.

Nevertheless, the group of ministers insisted that this outbreak is and must remain a priority for all involved.

“Cholera response and flood preparedness must be treated as urgent national priorities,” they said in the communiqué.
